The Burnet High School girls track and field team had several members advance to the Class 4A Region III meet because of their performances at the District 23 and 24-4A area meet April 15.
“This week gave us plenty to celebrate,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “Several performances came within fractions of a second of school records, a testament to the hard work and determination of this group. All three relay teams competed at their highest level, showing grit, teamwork and pride every step of the way.”
Senior Asah Roy finished fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes and 29.66 seconds.
“A familiar face at the next level, continues to battle each week, proving her consistency and competitive spirit. She’s just so fun to watch and has everyone’s heart with all she’s overcome in her career
Senior Wrigley Mulhollan also came in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.54 seconds and was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.74, just missing advancing to regionals by 0.02 seconds.
“Wrigley Mulhollan broke through in a big way,” the coach said. “After previous near-misses at the area level, she not only achieved personal bests in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, but also secured her spot at regionals in the 300 hurdles. Even more impressive, she now sits just two-tenths of a second away from a school record that has stood since 1997. Wrigley is such a ‘DAWG,’ and no one can deny how beautifully she runs these races.
The 1,600-meter relay team was fourth in 4:09.14. These runner compelled Shipley say these Lady Dawgs “showed incredible resilience throughout the season, overcoming injuries and illness to come together when it mattered most.”
The relay team includes and senior Journey Denton, who was the last runner and ensure the Lady Dawgs advanced by edging Waco La Vega by three-tenths of a second.
“With different athletes stepping into key roles, including senior Journey Denton’s leadership and determination, the team delivered strong performances across all legs to earn their best time of the season and a place at regionals,” she said.
Lacie Lewis came in fourth in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet and 6 inches.
“Lacie Lewis reached a personal career best in the pole vault, earning a podium finish and punching her ticket to regionals through perseverance and steady growth,” Shipley said.
Though the season ended for freshman triple jumper Landry Schubert, who was seventh with a mark of 35-7.5, Shipley was upbeat.
“Landry Schubert capped off an impressive debut season by earning a spot on the wall in the triple jump (a school record 36-6.5 at the District 24-4A meet), just the beginning of what promises to be a bright future,” she said.
The season also ended for the 400-meter team, which was sixth in 50.70 seconds, and 800-meter relay team, which came in seventh in 1:47.18.
“The Lady Dawgs track and field team delivered outstanding performance(s) at the area meet in Lorena, competing against some of the top talent from Districts 23 and 24,” Shipley said. “Rising to the challenge, our athletes proved they belong among the best, with competitors in eight events and four advancing to the regional meet in two weeks.”
The regional meet is May 1-2 at Bullard High School.
